TUKTOYAKTUK, N.W.T. – A conservationist has braved frigid temperatures to drive a solar car across an ice road in the Northwest Territories.

Marcelo da Luz drove the three-wheeled, non-heated solar car on Saturday from Inuvik to Tuktoyaktuk – a distance of 187 kilometres.

The car uses solar panels to charge its battery motor.

It’s part of a campaign to promote the use of clean and sustainable energy.

The trip took almost 10 hours as da Luz and his team dealt with four flat tires and high winds.

The Power of One team says it plans to try the return trip to Inuvik on Tuesday.
